Assane Diao expected to be fit for Senegal's World Cup opener

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has reassured supporters over the fitness of rising star Assane Diao after the forward missed the Lions’ final World Cup warm-up match against Saudi Arabia.

Diao was absent as Senegal played out a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in their last preparation fixture before the start of their World Cup campaign, prompting questions about his condition just days before the team’s opening match against France.

However, Thiaw moved quickly to calm fears, explaining that the decision to leave the Como attacker out of the match was purely precautionary.

According to the Senegal coach, Diao experienced minor discomfort after receiving a knock during training, leading the medical staff to recommend rest rather than risk aggravating the issue before the tournament begins.

“Assane felt a little discomfort after taking a knock in training. He had a minor physical issue, but nothing alarming. The medical staff preferred to rest him as a precaution. The most important thing is that everyone is ready for June 16th,” explained the Senegalese coach.

The update will come as welcome news for Senegal, who are putting the final touches on their preparations ahead of a challenging opening fixture against France.

Diao has emerged as one of the country’s most promising attacking talents and his availability would provide an additional option in the final third.

While his absence against Saudi Arabia initially raised concerns, the coach’s comments suggest there is no serious injury issue and that the player is being managed carefully ahead of the tournament.

Senegal’s technical staff appear focused on ensuring the squad reaches the competition in the best possible physical condition, with player welfare taking priority over results in pre-tournament friendlies.

Barring any unexpected setbacks in the coming days, Diao is expected to be available when Senegal begin their World Cup 2026 campaign on 16 June.

His return would be a timely boost for the Lions as they prepare to face one of the tournament’s strongest teams in their opening encounter.

For now, the message from the Senegal camp is one of reassurance rather than concern, with the forward’s absence viewed as a precautionary measure rather than a significant injury problem.
