World Cup 2026: Omar Marmoush eyes history as Egypt target first-ever tournament win

Omar Marmoush will have the opportunity to etch his name into Egyptian football history when the Pharaohs face New Zealand in Vancouver on Sunday in a crucial FIFA World Cup encounter.

Having once turned down the chance to represent Canada, the Manchester City forward now stands on the brink of becoming a national hero in Egypt as the North Africans chase a long-awaited first victory at the global showpiece.

Despite being one of Africa’s most successful football nations, with a record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, Egypt have endured a difficult history at the World Cup, failing to win any of their eight matches across previous appearances.

Their clash against New Zealand, who sit 56 places below Egypt in the FIFA rankings, presents a golden opportunity not only to secure that elusive maiden World Cup win but also to move beyond the group stage for the first time.

For Marmoush, the match offers another chance to underline his growing importance to the national team.

The 27-year-old has often operated in the shadow of Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah on the international stage, while at club level he has had to compete for prominence alongside prolific striker Erling Haaland since joining Manchester City 17 months ago.

However, Marmoush believes the fierce competition has helped elevate his game.

“It’s difficult but at the same time it makes you better, knowing that when you’re on the pitch you have to give your best. You have to perform because the next person is there, waiting to take your spot,” Marmoush said in a recent interview with GQ Middle East.

“I trained hard to get here. My whole career led up to this point – to compete and play with the best players in the world, trying to win titles.”

Born in Cairo, Marmoush began his football journey with Wadi Degla before leaving Egypt at the age of 18 to pursue his dream in Europe, joining German side Wolfsburg and embarking on a path that has now brought him to the world’s biggest stage.
