World Cup 2026: Nicaragua coach Juan Cruz Real backs Bafana Bafana to impress after friendly encounter
Nicaragua head coach Juan Cruz Real has expressed confidence that South Africa can make a strong impression at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, praising the quality and technical ability of South Africa national football team after their recent meeting.
Speaking after the match, Cruz Real highlighted the balance and talent within the South African squad, suggesting they possess the tools needed to compete effectively on football’s biggest stage in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
South Africa are drawn in Group A alongside South Korea national football team, Czech Republic national football team and hosts Mexico national football team, with their opening fixture set for June 11 against Mexico in what is expected to be a demanding start to their campaign.
Cruz Real was particularly impressed with the depth of quality within the Bafana Bafana setup, noting that while many of their players feature in the domestic league, the standard of competition in South Africa’s top flight remains strong and competitive.
He also pointed out the presence of players competing in top European leagues as an added boost to the squad’s overall experience and quality, suggesting that this blend of local and international talent gives South Africa a solid foundation heading into the tournament.
According to the Nicaragua coach, the difference in quality between South Africa and his own side was evident, but he was quick to emphasise that Bafana Bafana still possess significant technical ability and creativity in their squad.
He described the team as well-organised and technically gifted in key areas, adding that several players have the individual quality to influence matches at the highest level.
Despite acknowledging the challenge of competing against stronger opposition at a World Cup, Cruz Real insisted that South Africa have the potential to perform well if they maximise their strengths and maintain their tactical discipline.
His comments add to growing international recognition of Bafana Bafana’s progress under their current setup, with expectations building ahead of their return to the global stage.
South Africa will now continue preparations for their opening clash against Mexico, with hopes of carrying positive momentum into a group that promises to test their resilience and quality at every stage.
