World Cup 2026: Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman praises players despite exit to Morocco
Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has praised the fighting spirit and performance of his players despite their painful elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following defeat to Morocco in the Round of 32.
The Netherlands crashed out of the tournament after losing 3-2 on penalties to Morocco in a dramatic encounter at Monterrey Stadium. The match ended 1-1 after regular and extra time before the Atlas Lions held their nerve in the shootout to secure qualification to the Round of 16.
Speaking after the game in an interview with beIN SPORTS, Koeman admitted his disappointment with the result but expressed pride in the effort shown by his squad throughout the contest.
“I am happy with the players’ performance and the numerical intensity,” Koeman said after the match. “It was a beautiful match between two great teams.”
The Dutch coach acknowledged that the penalty shootout proved to be the decisive moment in the contest, while also lamenting his side’s misfortune during the dramatic finish.
“The penalty shootout decided the match,” he explained. “We were unlucky with the second penalty. Our goalkeeper made a save, and then it still went in. It was a very difficult situation during the shootout and it was not easy for the players.”
The Netherlands entered the clash hoping to progress deep into the competition, but Morocco produced another resilient display to frustrate the European giants before eventually sealing victory from the spot.
Despite the elimination, Koeman chose to focus on the positives from his team’s performance, praising their commitment, intensity and determination against a highly motivated Moroccan side.
The defeat marks a disappointing end to the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign, with the Dutch unable to find a breakthrough after an intense battle that remained closely contested throughout 120 minutes.
Morocco, led by coach Mohamed Wahbi, continued their impressive tournament run with another memorable victory on the global stage. The Atlas Lions showed composure and confidence during the penalty shootout to knock out one of Europe’s strongest football nations.
Following the victory, Morocco have now secured qualification to the Round of 16, where they will face Canada in another crucial knockout encounter next Saturday.
The North Africans will head into the match full of confidence as they continue their quest to extend their remarkable World Cup journey and make further history for African football.
