Mustapha Hadji hails Morocco's impressive start to World Cup

Former Morocco international Mustapha Hadji has praised the Atlas Lions following their strong performances in the opening two matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco began their Group C campaign with an impressive draw against Brazil before securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland in their second outing.

Speaking to Hesport, the former African Footballer of the Year applauded the team’s confidence and identity on the pitch.

“The Atlas Lions displayed a very respectable level in their first two matches. We saw our team confident and imposing their style of play,” Hadji said.

The 1998 African Golden Ball winner also highlighted the depth of talent within the current Moroccan squad, insisting the team possesses one of the brightest generations in its history.

“The Moroccan national team boasts exceptional talent in every position, and this pleases us all. I hope we continue in the same manner and style in the upcoming matches,” he added.

Hadji further pointed to the youthful profile of the squad as a major strength.

“What’s also remarkable about the national team is the average age of the players. We’re talking about a golden generation with an average age of 26 or younger, and this is not easy to find in any national team, even Brazil itself.”

The former Deportivo La Coruña midfielder reserved special praise for highly rated youngster Ayoub Bouaddi, describing him as one of the standout talents in the squad.

“He is a fantastic footballing gem. A player with these qualities is a great addition to the national team, which is why we hear that big clubs are trying to sign him.”

Hadji also spoke about the atmosphere within the Moroccan camp, revealing positive feedback from his brother, Youssouf Hadji, who is currently part of coach Mohamed Wahbi’s technical staff.

“I spoke with my brother before the Moroccan delegation traveled to America, and the atmosphere is very positive; they live like a family,” he stated.

The Atlas Lions currently sit second in Group C with four points, level with leaders Brazil after two matches. Morocco drew their opening fixture before defeating Scotland thanks to another disciplined display from a side led by captain Achraf Hakimi. Brazil, meanwhile, strengthened their position in the group with a 3-0 victory over Haiti.

Morocco will now turn their attention to their final group-stage match against Haiti next Wednesday as they seek qualification to the knockout stage of the tournament.
