World Cup 2026: Kylian Mbappe insists France’s only goal is to lift the trophy
France captain Kylian Mbappé insists his outfit sole objective is to secure the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup title in North Africa.
The Real Madrid superstar, who is of Cameroonian descent in an interview dismissed suggestions that reaching the semi-finals would represent a successful campaign for France, insisting that the former world champions must always aim for the biggest prize in international football.
France are preparing for what many observers have labelled the “Group of Death” at the World Cup, where they will face Senegal, Norway and Iraq in the group stage.
The Les Bleus arrive at the tournament as one of the favourites for the title. They lifted the World Cup in 2018 after defeating Croatia in the final and narrowly missed out on retaining the crown in 2022, finishing runners-up to Argentina after an epic final.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Mbappé stressed that France have no intention of setting modest targets for themselves.
“Our goal is to win the World Cup. We will go to the United States to win the World Cup,” Mbappé declared.
The 27-year-old forward questioned the logic behind claims that a semi-final appearance should be considered enough for a nation of France’s stature.
“I don’t understand this talk from the outside that the goal is to reach the semi-finals. If the goal is to reach the semi-finals, do we get there and stop competing, then go back home?” he said.
Mbappé also rejected speculation suggesting France would be satisfied with anything less than lifting the trophy at the end of the tournament.
“I don’t agree with those rumours at all. Our goal is to win the World Cup again; it’s everyone’s dream,” he added.
France head into the tournament after mixed results in their final warm-up matches. Didier Deschamps’ side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Ivory Coast before bouncing back with a convincing 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland in their last friendly before travelling to North America.
Mbappe’s comments underline the confidence within the French camp as they prepare for another assault on football’s biggest prize. With a squad packed with world-class talent and significant tournament experience, Les Bleus will be expected to challenge strongly for the title despite facing a difficult path from the very start of the competition.
The France captain’s message is unmistakable: anything short of becoming world champions again will not satisfy one of the tournament’s leading contenders.
