World Cup 2026: Hugo Broos charges South Africa to shut out Azteca atmosphere ahead of Mexico Clash

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has called on his players to remain mentally strong and block out the intense atmosphere expected when they face Mexico in their World Cup opener on Thursday.

The 74-year-old Belgian returns to the iconic Estadio Azteca, a venue he knows well from his playing days, when he featured in Belgium’s opening match against hosts Mexico at the 1986 World Cup.

Broos expects another deafening night in Mexico City and has warned his squad to prepare for a hostile environment as they open their Group A campaign.

“There will be a big crowd and there will not be so much South African support,” he said. “So that is a big help for them (Mexico).

“They will have 85,000 Mexicans shouting and singing. But we have to focus on our game. And if we can do that, if we are not too influenced by the noise of 85,000 Mexicans, then we can have a good game.”

The South Africa coach also described Mexico as the standout side in the group, pointing to their strong recent form.

“I think they’ve won nearly all of their last 10 games,” Broos said. “So they’ll be a team with confidence… they’re the best team in the group.

“So tomorrow it will be a very tough game. We need to be at our best level, but I can assure you our team is ready to fight for every metre and every ball.”

Kick off for the game is scheduled at 19:00 GMT.
