Hervé Renard opens up on Tunisia future

French coach Hervé Renard has refused to rule out extending his stay with the Tunisian national team despite reports suggesting he could leave immediately after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Renard was appointed by Tunisia on June 16 following the dismissal of former head coach Sabri Lamouchi during a difficult World Cup campaign for the Eagles of Carthage in Group F.

The 57-year-old tactician arrived in the middle of the tournament to stabilise the team after a chaotic start, with Tunisia struggling to meet expectations on the global stage. Although his appointment was initially viewed as a short-term solution, Renard has now hinted that his future could depend on discussions with the Tunisian Football Federation after the competition.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Tunisia’s crucial final group-stage clash against the Netherlands, the experienced coach insisted that no final decision has been taken regarding his future.

“The time will come for everyone, including the federation, to take stock,” Renard said.

“I am open to any discussion and ready to listen to the plans. Tunisian football is highly respected in Africa; there have always been some very good teams. Qualifying for the World Cup three times in a row is no mean feat.”

His comments have sparked speculation that the former Morocco and Saudi Arabia coach could remain in charge beyond the World Cup if both parties agree on a long-term project.

Renard is widely respected across African football for his achievements on the continent. He remains the only manager to have won the Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries, guiding Zambia to a historic triumph in 2012 before leading Ivory Coast to continental glory in 2015.

The Frenchman also earned global recognition after masterminding Saudi Arabia’s famous victory over eventual champions Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Since taking charge of Tunisia, Renard has attempted to restore confidence and discipline within the squad ahead of their decisive encounter against the Netherlands. The Eagles of Carthage still have hopes of progressing to the knockout stage, although their fate depends heavily on results elsewhere.

Despite uncertainty surrounding his future, Renard’s latest comments suggest he has not completely closed the door on continuing his journey with Tunisian football.
