World Cup 2026

Moroccan football legend Mustapha Hadji believes the Atlas Lions have earned worldwide respect to the point where the biggest national teams now view beating Morocco as a major objective.

The former Morocco star shared his thoughts ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the remarkable progress the national team has made in recent years and the challenges that come with its growing reputation.

Morocco’s Rise Has Changed Expectations

Speaking to Moroccan outlet Al-Botola, Hadji praised the development of the national team and emphasised the importance of supporting the current generation of players.

“We are behind this team, and we will support any player who is called up.”

The former midfielder noted that Morocco’s success has transformed the way opponents view the Atlas Lions, making them one of the most respected teams in international football.

“The real problem is that everyone now wants to beat Morocco, and that makes it difficult. In the past, we didn’t expect this level from the team, but Morocco has developed a lot, and its players have reached a high level. Today, any team in the world, whether it’s Germany, Argentina, or Brazil, wants to beat Morocco.”

Belief in Another Historic World Cup Run

Hadji also addressed the possibility of Morocco replicating their historic performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.

While optimistic about the team’s chances, he stressed the importance of maintaining focus and taking the tournament one game at a time.

“God willing, why not? But we have to deal with the tournament match by match, and not make any calculations beforehand. We are with them, and we will continue to support them, and I hope that they reach the furthest point possible.”

Tough Group Awaits Atlas Lions

Morocco head into the 2026 World Cup with high expectations following their recent success on the global stage.

The Atlas Lions have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, setting up a challenging path to the knockout stages.

With confidence growing around the team and expectations higher than ever, Morocco will be aiming to prove once again that they belong among the world’s elite football nations.
