World Cup 2026: Ghanaians divided after Black Stars fall to Colombia in Round of 32
Ghana’s World Cup journey came to an end following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in Kansas City, and supporters on social media reacted with a mixture of frustration, disappointment, pride and calls for major changes ahead of future competitions. Colombia progressed thanks to an early strike from Jhon Arias, while Ghana failed to register a shot on target throughout the contest.
Many fans focused their criticism on the team’s lack of attacking threat and poor decision-making in the final third.
John Gameli Galley: “Masa we make serious ooo. Shot on target zero, crossing to head zero. Striking ability zero. I mean wey no play nothing. Atizigi try sef.”
The performance of goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi generated contrasting opinions. While some blamed him for the opening goal, others considered him among Ghana’s best players on the night after making several important saves to keep the score respectable. Colombia dominated large periods and forced the goalkeeper into repeated action.
Michael Nyarko Senior: “They played rubbish today….aswear…. kudos to Partey, Jerome and Atizigi.”
Questions surrounding Thomas Asante’s continued absence became one of the biggest talking points online.
Debrah Jnr: “If there’s anything that transpired between Thomas Asante and the coaching staff after the Panama match, we will love to know. Cos why hasn’t he featured in any game since?”
Boateng Jerome: “What did Thomas Asante do wrong?”
Omama Kofi Takyi: “Why Thomas Asante didn’t come on?”
Several supporters also criticised the reliance on experienced figures such as Jordan Ayew and Elisha Owusu, arguing that younger and more dynamic players deserved greater opportunities.
Joey Junior: “Jordan has made Semenyo suffer in this tournament.”
Alhassan Busi: “What at all is Jordan contributing to the team?”
Emmanuel Koranteng Narh: “We needed goal, you brought Elisha Owusu who can’t even make any good pass.”
Others called for a broader reset within the national team structure.
Soyoro Solicitor: “The team needs #reset.”
Odehye Samuel: “GFA the team is not for some individuals aaaaa.”
Still, amid the criticism, a section of supporters chose to focus on the positives from Ghana’s campaign. The Black Stars reached the knockout stage for the first time since 2010 after beating Panama, holding England to a memorable goalless draw, and finishing ahead of Panama in Group L.
Patience Emieaboe: “Thank you all!!! We live to fight again!”
Jacob Teddy Gbah: “Proud of y’all❤️”
Antoinette Sinzogah: “Congratulations more win ahead we have promising players we wish you all the best ♥️”
One of the more measured assessments came from Ohemaa Barbara, who backed coach Carlos Queiroz to remain in charge while advocating for tactical and personnel adjustments.
“For the coach, we need to maintain him and start planning ahead of our AFCON qualifiers. We made mistakes by not taking players like Ashimeru and Paintsil. Jordan himself knows his days as captain are numbered.”
Others highlighted Thomas Partey, Jerome Opoku and Gideon Mensah as Ghana’s standout performers against Colombia.
Sakyi Philip: “Kudos to Partey, Jerome and Gideon Mensah….You guys were the men of the match.”
Despite the painful exit, many supporters acknowledged that the Black Stars exceeded pre-tournament expectations by reaching the Round of 32 and producing one of the competition’s biggest shocks with their defensive masterclass against England. The challenge now, according to fans, is transforming a promising foundation into a more dynamic and attack-minded team for future tournaments.
