World Cup 2026: Ghanaians celebrate Black Stars' heroic draw against England

Ghanaians flooded social media with praise, pride and renewed belief after the Black Stars secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Few gave Ghana much chance before kick-off, with England entering the contest as overwhelming favourites following their thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia. However, Carlos Queiroz’s side produced a disciplined and resilient display to frustrate the Three Lions and move a step closer to the knockout stages.

The result sparked jubilant reactions from supporters across Ghana and beyond, with many hailing the team’s organisation, fighting spirit and defensive discipline.

“Excellent performance,” wrote Ron Owusu Marshall, while Keith Owusu singled out goalkeeper Benjamin Asare and defender Jerome Opoku for special praise.

“SM Asare and Jerome Opoku did a marvelous job.”

Many supporters also credited Queiroz for masterminding a tactical display that neutralised one of the tournament favourites.

“The coach is the man of the match for Ghana,” posted Great Yakini.

“The coach too, he try ankasa,” added Tina Maame Esi Effirim.

The Black Stars’ defensive organisation emerged as a major talking point after they kept England’s star-studded attack quiet for long spells.

“What a defense,” wrote Terpe Curry.

“Congratulations best defense,” added Ama Adepa.

Several fans believed Ghana were unfortunate not to leave Boston with all three points.

“The chances England got, if it were us, we would have scored them. Our boys did well!” wrote Kutung Abdalla.

Daniel Owusu Mensah also felt Ghana were denied a crucial opportunity, claiming: “The tackle on Prince Adu was a clear penalty.”

While most supporters celebrated the point, some urged caution and called for continued improvement ahead of the decisive final group match against Croatia.

Esther Adomah Effah Brown wrote: “Keep it up guys. Give us real goals in the next match.”

Dery Matthew was already looking ahead, posting: “Well done guys. Croatia next.”

The performance also earned admiration from football fans across Africa. Messages of support arrived from Nigeria, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Morocco, highlighting the continental pride generated by Ghana’s display against England.

“One love from Zambia,” wrote Kayuwa Kuyendela Hezron.

“We are proud of you guys,” posted supporters from South Africa and Botswana, while Moroccan fan Moussa El Yaou congratulated the Black Stars and wished them further success in the tournament.

Not everyone was satisfied, however. Some supporters questioned the celebrations surrounding a draw.

“Celebrating a draw against England. Tufiakwaaaaaaaaa,” wrote Me-Star Noni, reflecting the view of fans who believe Ghana should always aim for victory regardless of the opposition.

Nevertheless, the overwhelming mood online was one of pride and optimism.

After entering the tournament on the back of a difficult run of results, Ghana have now collected four points from two matches and remain firmly in contention for a place in the Round of 32.

The goalless draw against England was built on organisation, discipline and belief, qualities that many supporters believe could carry the Black Stars even further as the tournament progresses.
