Morocco attacker Sofiane Boufal joins Al-Ittihad Tripoli on free transfer

Morocco international Sofiane Boufal has joined Libyan club Al-Ittihad Tripoli on a free transfer, bringing his experience at the highest level to a new chapter in his career.

The Libyan club confirmed the signing on Monday after reaching an agreement with the 32-year-old, who became a free agent following his departure from French side Le Havre in May.

Al-Ittihad unveiled their new signing through a promotional video on their official social media platforms, welcoming the former Morocco international.

“Proud of his choice, honored by the crest, a great star wears the shirt of history… Welcome, Sofiane Boufal,” the club posted.

Boufal chooses Libya after European interest

The move to Libya comes as a surprise after Boufal reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Europe during the transfer window.

Potential moves to Ligue 1 and La Liga had been discussed, but none of the negotiations resulted in an agreement.

Al-Ittihad’s offer ultimately convinced the Moroccan playmaker to continue his career in Libya, where he will bring considerable experience from his time in European and Middle Eastern football.

Morocco star brings wealth of experience

Boufal developed through the youth system at Angers before establishing himself at Lille, a spell that helped pave the way for moves to Southampton and Celta Vigo.

The Moroccan has also played for Al Rayyan, Union Saint-Gilloise and Le Havre during his career.

After joining Le Havre in January, Boufal made 17 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring once and providing four assists.

His international career has also been significant. Boufal has won nearly 50 caps for Morocco and was part of the Atlas Lions side that made history by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Boufal begins new challenge in Libya

The veteran forward will now look to use his experience to make an impact at Al-Ittihad Tripoli as the Libyan club add an established Moroccan international to their squad.

Boufal’s current market value is estimated at €1.8 million.
