France will face Morocco in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup knowing that three of their six defeats at the tournament since 2002 have come against African opposition.

The meeting will be the second time Les Bleus have faced an African nation in this year’s competition after opening their campaign against Senegal.

As France prepare for another encounter with continental rivals, recent World Cup history shows African teams have already produced memorable victories against the former world champions.

Morocco become France’s latest African opponents

Morocco secured their place in the last eight after an impressive run through the tournament and now face a French side aiming to continue its quest for another World Cup title.

The Atlas Lions arrive full of confidence after progressing through the knockout stages, while France continue their own pursuit of a place in the semi-finals.

Although France have established themselves among the strongest teams in world football during the past two decades, defeats at the World Cup have been relatively rare.

Since the 2002 tournament, Les Bleus have lost only six matches in World Cup competition.

Half of those defeats came against African nations.

Senegal stunned France in 2002

The first of those setbacks arrived at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea.

France, who entered the tournament as defending champions, were beaten 1-0 by Senegal in Seoul.

Pape Bouba Diop scored the only goal of the match, producing one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

France’s difficult campaign continued with another defeat, this time a 2-0 loss to Denmark in the group stage, ending their hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds.

South Africa and Tunisia also claimed victories

France’s next defeat against African opposition came at the 2010 World Cup.

Hosts South Africa defeated Les Bleus 2-1 in Bloemfontein despite Florent Malouda scoring for France.

Earlier in the same tournament, France had also suffered a 2-0 defeat against Mexico, contributing to another disappointing group-stage exit.

Four years later, France reached the quarter-finals before losing 1-0 to Germany in Brazil.

Les Bleus then enjoyed an unbeaten run throughout the 2018 World Cup, lifting the trophy without suffering a single defeat.

Their most recent World Cup loss came during the group stage of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Tunisia secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Wahbi Khazri, adding another African success against France on football’s biggest stage.

Another chapter awaits

Morocco now become the latest African nation to test France at the World Cup.

The Atlas Lions will attempt to extend Africa’s notable record against Les Bleus while seeking a place in the tournament’s semi-finals.

France, meanwhile, will aim to avoid becoming the fourth African victory over the national team since 2002 and continue their own pursuit of World Cup glory.

With both sides carrying confidence into the quarter-final, history provides an intriguing backdrop, but the outcome will ultimately be decided on the pitch when they meet on Thursday.
