World Cup 2026: Emam Ashour apologises to Egyptians after disappointing loss to Argentina
Egypt midfielder Emam Ashour has apologised to the nation’s supporters following the Pharaohs’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while promising the team will return stronger in future tournaments.
Egypt’s World Cup journey came to a painful end at Atlanta Stadium after they surrendered a two-goal advantage against the defending champions. The Pharaohs looked on course for a historic victory after taking a 2-0 lead, but Argentina produced a stunning late comeback by scoring three times after the 80th minute to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, Ashour admitted the result was difficult to accept but highlighted the team’s achievement in competing against the world champions.
“We had big dreams in this World Cup, but they were shattered after the defeat to Argentina,” Ashour told a television programme.
“It was a great achievement to compete with the world champions. We were leading 2-0, but in the end that’s what happened.
“I apologise to all the Egyptian fans for the defeat. We promise to make you proud in the coming tournaments.”
Egypt reached the knockout stage after a memorable group campaign and progressed to the last 16 by defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The Pharaohs began their tournament with a 1-1 draw against Belgium, before securing a 3-1 victory over New Zealand. They later finished second in Group G after another 1-1 draw against Iran.
Despite their elimination, Ashour insisted the experience would serve as motivation for the team as they continue their development on the international stage.
