World Cup 2026: DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba sets humble tone ahead of Group K challenge

DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba has called for humility and discipline as the Leopards prepare for a historic return to the FIFA World Cup, stressing that the team’s progress is rooted in the influence of head coach Sébastien Desabre.

Mbemba praised the Frenchman’s leadership and work ethic, saying it has had a strong impact on the squad’s mentality and approach.

“I give credit to our coach Sebastien. His modesty and hard work ethic has rubbed off on the players,” Mbemba said.

The DR Congo skipper highlighted the significance of the nation’s return to football’s biggest stage, a moment he described as both historic and emotional after more than five decades away from the tournament.

“We are back at the World Cup after 52 years, preparing to face some nations who compete at the tournament every four years,” he added.

Despite the excitement surrounding qualification, Mbemba was quick to temper expectations, insisting the squad remains grounded and focused on collective responsibility.

“Our promises to the people of Congo are that we will continue to be humble, keep our feet on the ground and work relentlessly to achieve success.”

DR Congo have been drawn into a demanding Group K, where they will face European giants Portugal, South American heavyweights Colombia, and Uzbekistan in what promises to be a stern test of their progress on the global stage.
