World Cup 2026: Deniz Undav scores twice as Germany rally from behind to beat Ivory Coast
Substitute Deniz Undav emerged as Germany’s hero, scoring twice late in the game to inspire a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast and seal the Europeans’ place in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup.
Germany dominated the early exchanges and looked the more likely side to break the deadlock. Julian Nagelsmann’s men created several opportunities, with Jamal Musiala and Felix Nmecha both testing the Ivorian defence from range.
Aleksandar Pavlovic also thought he had given the four-time world champions the lead, only for his effort to be ruled out after a foul on goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.
Despite Germany’s bright start, Ivory Coast gradually settled into the contest. The Elephants capitalised immediately after the first-half hydration break when Amad Diallo’s effort was blocked into the path of Franck Kessie, who calmly slotted home from close range to hand the African side a surprise lead.
Many expected Germany to mount a strong response after the interval, but it was Ivory Coast who continued to threaten. Kessie, Yan Diomande and Inao Oulai all squandered promising opportunities that could have doubled their advantage.
Nagelsmann’s tactical changes eventually shifted the momentum in Germany’s favour. One of the substitutes, Nadiem Amiri, played a crucial role by setting up fellow substitute Undav, who expertly volleyed home from close range to restore parity.
Undav nearly completed the turnaround moments later, but Fofana denied him with a fine save. The Ivorian goalkeeper was again called into action, producing a superb stop to keep out Nathaniel Brown’s effort as the match entered its closing stages.
However, Fofana could do little to prevent Undav from snatching the winner deep into stoppage time.
The striker showed great composure to turn and finish from Felix Nmecha’s pass, sealing a dramatic 2-1 victory and securing Germany’s place in the knockout rounds for the first time since the 2014 World Cup triumph.
Germany will conclude their Group campaign against Ecuador in New Jersey on Thursday, June 25, while Ivory Coast face Curacao in Philadelphia at the same time.
