World Cup 2026: Bruno Fernandes warns Portugal to brace for physical DR Congo challenge
Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has issued a strong warning ahead of his side’s World Cup clash with DR Congo, insisting the Leopards are a dangerous, well-drilled opponent capable of causing serious problems on the counter-attack.
The European powerhouse face DR Congo in a highly anticipated Group K encounter on Wednesday, with both sides aiming to strengthen their position in the group standings. Ahead of kick-off, the Manchester United playmaker highlighted his familiarity with several DR Congo players, stressing that Portugal are fully aware of the challenge that awaits them.
Bruno Fernandes admitted that personal connections and regular club-level encounters with some DR Congo players have given him valuable insight into their strengths.
“We know their qualities very well. I have two close friends in their team who played with me at Manchester United, so I know them well. I also play against some of them in the Premier League,” Fernandes said.
The Portugal international praised DR Congo’s structure and physical approach, warning that they are more than capable of unsettling even top-tier opposition.
“Therefore, I think they are a well-prepared team, and they can cause us a lot of problems. But we are ready for whatever they can do. Of course, we hope they won’t surprise us,” he added.
Fernandes went on to break down DR Congo’s tactical strengths, pointing to their pace in transition and direct attacking style as key threats Portugal must neutralise.
“But we know they possess immense physical strength and are a very strong team on the counter-attack, thanks to their speed in attack and individual skills,” he explained.
“They are also very good with crosses from the right side; we have seen that, and we have worked on improving against it as well.”
DR Congo, representing the Democratic Republic of the Congo, head into the fixture with growing confidence after a spirited start to their World Cup campaign. Their blend of athleticism, direct attacking play, and defensive organisation has already drawn attention from several opponents in the group.
Portugal, meanwhile, are expected to rely heavily on their technical superiority and midfield control to dictate the tempo of the match. However, Fernandes’ comments suggest they are taking no chances against a DR Congo side increasingly viewed as a potential surprise package in the tournament.
With both teams aware of the stakes, the match promises a fascinating tactical battle—Portugal’s structured possession game against DR Congo’s explosive counter-attacking threat.
