World Cup 2026: ‘Bench Jordan!’ – Ghanaians celebrate dramatic Panama win as Yirenkyi becomes new fan favourite
Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama sparked a wave of emotion across social media, with fans celebrating Caleb Yirenkyi’s late winner while also demanding changes to the Black Stars lineup ahead of the crucial clash against England.
The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder scored in the 95th minute to hand Ghana all three points in their Group L opener after a tense contest in Toronto. The victory moved the Black Stars level on points with England and significantly boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Unsurprisingly, Yirenkyi was the star of the post-match conversation.
“Caleb Yirenkyi did it,” wrote Dery Matthew, joking that the midfielder had saved the blood pressure of over 30 million Ghanaians with one goal.
Others hailed him as the future of the national team.
“Caleb Yirenkyi is a wonder boy,” wrote Seth Humble, while Adam Abdul-Hanan simply described him as the “man of the moment.”
Many supporters also praised substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante, whose driving run and assist created the winning goal.
“Thomas Asante changed the whole attacking front,” wrote Nuur Cabdilaahi Qoorgaab.
Emmanuel Tagor Sterling echoed that sentiment, saying: “That sprint from Thomas Asante was everything. Start him in the next game.”
Several fans felt the Coventry City forward should be rewarded with a place in the starting lineup against England.
While Yirenkyi and Thomas-Asante received widespread praise, captain Jordan Ayew came in for heavy criticism.
“Bench Jordan, we beg,” wrote Christian Bosompem.
“Jordan should start from the bench,” added Realbwoy Badu.
Others questioned why the Leicester City forward remained on the pitch for so long, with some supporters calling for Prince Adu or Thomas-Asante to start in the next match.
The performance itself divided opinion. Although fans celebrated the victory, many admitted Ghana were fortunate to escape with all three points after being second-best for long periods.
“Panama was better from the beginning honestly, but that’s football,” wrote Abdelaziz Lamari.
Kwessi Bankz warned that Ghana must improve before facing England.
“Ghana must work on their midfield before facing England if not, the goals may be up to four.”
Others focused on the positives, particularly the defensive effort and the performances of goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and his replacement Benjamin Asare.
“We have suffered. This is a miracle,” joked Suzan Frimpong.
Samuel Kofi Amissah struck a more optimistic tone, congratulating the players and urging Ghanaians to continue believing in the team.
The reactions reflected a fanbase relieved to see Ghana end a difficult run of results. The Black Stars may not have produced a vintage display, but Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time heroics ensured supporters woke up smiling.
Now attention turns to England, where Ghana’s fans hope their new hero can inspire another memorable World Cup night.
