William Troost-Ekong set to join Saudi club Al-Khalood
William Troost-Ekong, who was named the best player of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is poised to make a significant move to Saudi Arabia. Despite his standout performances for Nigeria, which saw the team reach the final against Ivory Coast, the central defender’s value has not skyrocketed in the European transfer market.
Troost-Ekong’s exemplary performances at AFCON 2023, alongside Victor Osimhen, were pivotal in Nigeria’s journey to the final.
However, his market value in Europe has not reflected his on-field successes. The 29-year-old, who currently plays for PAOK Salonika and serves as the captain of the Nigerian national team with 71 caps and 7 goals, has not seen substantial interest from European clubs.
This lack of interest could be attributed to his injury-plagued second half of the season, which saw him sidelined for a considerable period.
Initially, Shabab Al-Ahli from the United Arab Emirates appeared to be in contention for Troost-Ekong’s signature. Paulo Sousa, who briefly coached him at Salernitana, expressed interest in bringing the central defender to Dubai.
The Emirati club made an initial offer of €1 million, matching his purchase price from Watford but falling short of his €2 million valuation on Transfermarkt.
Despite the interest from Shabab Al-Ahli, it is Saudi club Al-Khalood that has secured Troost-Ekong’s services.
Renowned football insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed that PAOK and Al-Khalood have reached an agreement for an undisclosed fee, with personal terms also nearing finalization.
This move signifies a new chapter for Troost-Ekong, who will leave European football for the burgeoning football scene in Saudi Arabia.
Troost-Ekong was notably absent from the bench during PAOK’s 2-2 draw against Malmö in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League’s third preliminary round.
His last contribution came in the previous round, where he scored against Banja Luka. His departure means he will miss the opportunity to participate further in this season’s European competitions.
As Troost-Ekong prepares to join Al-Khalood, the move highlights the increasing appeal of Saudi Arabian clubs in attracting top talent from around the world.
His transfer is not only a significant step for the player but also a testament to the growing investment in football by Saudi clubs, aiming to enhance their competitiveness and global presence.
William Troost-Ekong’s move to Al-Khalood marks a significant transition in his career.
Despite the lack of substantial offers from Europe, his new venture in Saudi Arabia presents an opportunity to continue his professional journey and showcase his defensive prowess on a different stage.
As he prepares to don the Al-Khalood jersey, Troost-Ekong remains a celebrated figure in African football, with his AFCON 2023 performance solidifying his status as one of the continent’s top defenders.
