Wesley Fofana has delivered a calm but determined message about his France ambitions after Chelsea’s bruising 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 first leg.

Speaking in the mixed zone, the Chelsea defender admitted the scoreline made it difficult to take any positives from his own display, yet he made clear that the 2026 World Cup is still a major target for him.

“Thank you if you think I’m coming back well,” Fofana said. “After a match like that, it’s hard to say we played well. But yes, the World Cup, for any player who is international, it’s always on my mind.”

After several injury-hit seasons, Fofana highlighted how he is trying to stay grounded while using the national team as fuel. “I won’t lie: where I come from, after the tough years I’ve had, if I go, it’s good, if I don’t go, it’s not the end of the world, I’ll get over it. But yes, it’s a source of motivation.”

He stressed that consistent performances for Chelsea must come first, noting he feels physically strong again and wants to build rhythm during a demanding run of fixtures under Liam Rosenior.
