Watkins completes Al-Hilal move as Benzema’s Saudi future hangs in the balance

Al-Hilal have officially signed England striker Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa before the close of the current summer transfer window, with Karim Benzema’s departure from the Saudi club now expected.

The move was announced by Al-Hilal in an official video published on the club’s account on X. Watkins was shown wearing the club’s shirt and confirming his arrival at the Riyadh-based side, known as “The Blue”.

His transfer comes amid reports that Al-Hilal have reached a financial settlement with Benzema, effectively bringing the French forward’s time at the club to an end. The news follows growing speculation over the former Real Madrid player’s position and whether he would remain part of Al-Hilal’s squad.

Watkins also appeared to bid farewell to Aston Villa, where he spent six years. In a message shared on his official social media accounts, he wrote: “Six wonderful years have come to an end. Thank you for the great memories, and for always supporting me in moments of joy and difficulty. Saying goodbye is never easy for this club, as it was a huge part of my life both on and off the pitch.”

The 29-year-old joined Aston Villa in 2020 and became an important part of the club’s attack during his time at Villa Park. His move to Al-Hilal gives the Saudi side a new focal point in attack as they continue to reshape their forward line.

Watkins is expected to lead the Al-Hilal attack in the coming period. He will be joined in the club’s attacking options by Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville, who arrived from West Ham and can operate on either the right or left flank.

There is also increasing speculation that Al-Hilal are close to completing a deal for Brazil international Gabriel Martinelli. However, the reports surrounding that potential transfer have not yet been accompanied by an official announcement from the club.
