WAFCON 2026: Nigeria’s Super Falcons open camp in Casablanca ahead of tournament in Morocco
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will officially begin their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Monday as the team’s training camp opens in Casablanca, Morocco.
The nine-time African champions are expected to start their final build-up ahead of the tournament with all invited players reporting to camp following the announcement of head coach Justine Madugu’s 25-player squad.
Madugu unveiled his final selection last Friday as the technical team moved into the final phase of preparations for the continental showpiece. The squad features a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talents as Nigeria aim to reclaim their dominance on the African stage.
The Super Falcons will use the Casablanca camp to fine-tune their tactics, build team chemistry and assess the fitness levels of players before the tournament officially gets underway.
Nigeria have been placed in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt, setting up a competitive group-stage battle against three teams with growing ambitions in women’s football.
The Falcons will open their WAFCON 2026 campaign against Malawi’s Scorchers on Tuesday, July 28, at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat. The encounter will mark the beginning of Nigeria’s quest for another continental title after years of dominance in the competition.
Following their opening fixture, Nigeria will face Zambia in their second group game before concluding the group stage against Egypt. The matches are expected to test the squad’s readiness as they compete against some of Africa’s most improved women’s national teams.
With a rich history at the tournament, Nigeria enter the competition under pressure to deliver. The Super Falcons have won the WAFCON title a record nine times and remain one of the most feared teams on the continent, but recent years have seen increased competition from emerging sides.
Coach Justine Madugu and his technical team will be hoping the training camp provides the perfect environment to sharpen the team’s approach and ensure the players are physically and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.
The tournament also presents an opportunity for several players to make their mark on the international stage, with competition for places expected to be intense as Nigeria look to assemble their strongest possible lineup.
As preparations begin in Morocco, expectations remain high among Nigerian supporters, who will be hoping the Super Falcons can once again demonstrate their pedigree and compete for another major African title.
