Vinicius commits to Real Madrid until 2032 after Mourinho talks

Jose Mourinho played a decisive role in persuading Vinicius Junior to continue at Real Madrid, with the new head coach making clear that the Brazil forward will be central to his plans for the club’s next era.

The Portuguese manager has not simply expressed admiration for Vinicius’ ability. He has told the player that the next Real Madrid side will be built around him, viewing him as one of the most important figures in the club’s future.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, the agreement to extend Vinicius’ contract followed lengthy and, at times, complicated negotiations. Real Madrid were determined to keep the forward and eventually improved their final offer, while Vinicius showed flexibility by accepting less than he had initially requested.

The two sides ultimately reached an agreement that will keep him at the club until 2032. Although Mourinho was not the only reason for the renewal, his influence became particularly important during the final stage of discussions.

For Vinicius, recognition of his importance to the new project was almost as significant as the financial terms agreed on Wednesday. Mourinho wanted him to feel that he would be one of the main pillars of the restructured Real Madrid and that the manager regarded him as essential to his long-term plans.

The player appeared to acknowledge that influence in a message published after the contract announcement. Alongside references to “the president”, “Jony”, “Jose Angel” and his team-mates, Vinicius also mentioned Mourinho, highlighting the Portuguese coach’s role during the negotiations.

Mourinho and Vinicius first made direct contact during the World Cup, when the manager called the Brazilian. Their initial conversation was not about detailed tactical plans or specific arrangements for the future, but it created the foundations for a relationship between the two.

The first impression was highly positive, and the pair quickly developed a good rapport. That relationship later helped convince Mourinho that Vinicius should be one of the central figures in his new Real Madrid project.

Vinicius described their first exchange by saying: “I met the new coach and the new players and trained hard.”

He added: “Mourinho asked me to be: happy, cheerful, and to play football in my own style.”

Mourinho believes Vinicius possesses the qualities required to lead his plans. The forward can change the outcome of matches on his own, offers a constant attacking threat and is capable of creating danger in a wide range of situations.

The extension until 2032 therefore reflects a clear intention to give Vinicius a leading position within the new Real Madrid team. Mourinho’s first major challenge will be to rediscover the best version of the player who came close to winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024.

Everyone involved in the project believes Vinicius can return to that level if he is given the right environment and the stability required to regain his consistency.

His statistics did not fall dramatically last season. He scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists, making it the fifth successive campaign in which he had passed 20 goals while contributing to more than 10 additional goals through assists or penalties. Even so, his overall performances did not always match the high standards he had previously established, making it a turbulent season for the Brazil international.

One major source of tension was a lack of understanding with Xabi Alonso, which reached its height during the incident at Camp Nou. Vinicius, however, received strong backing from Alvaro Arbeloa, who publicly stood by him and reaffirmed his position on several occasions.

As the 2026-27 season begins, Vinicius appears to have extra motivation to respond on the pitch and prove himself again. He had started the World Cup under Carlo Ancelotti in promising form, but the tournament ended in disappointment when Brazil were eliminated by Norway in the last 16.

His mood has now changed. With his future secured at Real Madrid until 2032 and a clear understanding with Mourinho over his role, Vinicius is beginning a new chapter that looks very different from the previous campaign.

Mourinho’s second major task will be to create balance across the team. Vinicius’ partnership with Kylian Mbappe will require a system that allows both players to operate in harmony rather than appearing as separate stars competing for influence.

The manager also wants to preserve Jude Bellingham’s central role. During the World Cup, Bellingham showed he could carry significant responsibility and revived memories of the outstanding impression he made during his start to life at Real Madrid.

Vinicius, Mbappe and Bellingham are expected to become the main attacking leaders of a new-look side that has undergone significant change and lost Rodri, while also reshaping its identity.

The project extends beyond that trio. It also includes a prolific forward such as Diomande, whose arrival was one of the important elements connected to Mourinho’s involvement in designing the new squad.

Mourinho knows that collecting elite players alone does not guarantee success. His real challenge is to make them work collectively and understand their responsibilities clearly.

That is why he invested so heavily in Vinicius. The aim is not merely to retain the Brazilian, but to turn him into the genuine focal point of Real Madrid’s next project and give him the conditions to recover his finest form.

Mourinho has chosen to place his faith in Vinicius, while Real Madrid have extended their confidence in the forward until 2032. The difficult part now begins: turning that trust into performances and results, and building a side capable of returning to the top.
