Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye will miss his side’s upcoming La Liga fixture against Getafe after suffering an ankle injury while on international duty with Senegal.
The 25-year-old was forced off at halftime during Senegal’s goalless draw against Sudan last week and was subsequently unavailable for the team’s 2-0 victory over Togo.
While initial fears suggested the injury could be serious, Villarreal head coach Marcelino has reassured fans that Gueye’s condition is not as severe as first thought.
Marcelino’s update on Gueye’s recovery
Speaking in a press conference ahead of Villarreal’s match against Getafe, Marcelino acknowledged that the club was initially concerned about the extent of Gueye’s injury but has since received positive news regarding his recovery.
“Yes, we were a little scared at first because we thought, and even the player himself believed, that it was a more serious injury,” Marcelino said. “Fortunately, it seems to be minimal. Even though we will continue monitoring his progress, it is much less concerning than we originally anticipated.”
Gueye, who joined Villarreal on loan from Marseille, has been a key figure in the Yellow Submarine’s midfield.
His absence is a setback for the team, but Marcelino remains optimistic about his return.
“Pape is an important player for this team—not because I say so, but because his performances on the pitch speak for themselves. Above all, we must stay positive because we believe that if all goes well, he will be able to gradually resume training at the start of next week,” the coach added.
Impact on Villarreal’s lineup
Gueye’s absence means Villarreal will have to adjust their midfield setup against Getafe.
The Senegalese international has been a crucial presence in the squad since his arrival, providing defensive stability and ball progression.
Marcelino may turn to Étienne Capoue or Ramón Terrats to fill the void in midfield.
Despite the setback, Villarreal will look to build on their recent form as they aim to climb the La Liga standings.
The club currently sits in mid-table, and every match is crucial in their push for European qualification.
Gueye, meanwhile, will focus on his rehabilitation, with hopes of returning to full training next week.
His return could provide a timely boost for Villarreal as they approach a crucial phase of the season.
