Yacine Brahimi aims to make Algeria squad for 2026 World Cup

Veteran Algerian star Yacine Brahimi is hopeful of earning a place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup tournament to be co-hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The experienced winger, who represented Algeria at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, admitted he remains optimistic about earning a recall to Les Fennecs despite not being selected for the national team in over a year.

Speaking in an emotional interview with Ennahar TV, the 36-year-old expressed his determination and belief that he still has something to offer at the highest level.

“I’ll be in front of my TV for the squad announcement. It’s my last chance to play in a World Cup, after 2014.”

Brahimi’s comments come after another productive campaign with Al-Gharafa in Qatar, where he has continued to demonstrate his quality and experience by scoring nine goals and providing 14 assists this season.

Despite fierce competition for attacking places in Algeria’s squad, the former Porto star insists he feels physically and mentally prepared should the national team coach decide to place his trust in him once again.

“Despite the competition, I feel ready. If not, I’ll be supporting my country, as always. If I’m called up, it would be a dream come true. I remain optimistic.”

For many Algerian supporters, Brahimi remains one of the most technically gifted players of his generation. His creativity, dribbling ability and composure played a major role during Algeria’s memorable 2014 World Cup campaign, where the Desert Foxes reached the Round of 16 for the first time in their history before narrowly losing to eventual champions Germany.

Although age and the emergence of younger talents have pushed him out of the national setup in recent years, Brahimi’s strong form in Qatar has reignited discussions about whether his experience could still benefit Algeria on the global stage.

The winger’s respectful and patriotic tone during the interview also highlighted his enduring love for the national team. Even if he misses out on selection, Brahimi made it clear that his commitment to Algeria remains unchanged.

With the squad announcement drawing closer, anticipation continues to grow among Algerian fans eager to see whether one of the country’s most iconic modern footballers will be granted a final opportunity to wear the green and white at a World Cup.
