Valentin Beo Bato’s acrobatic strike denied as Rayon Sports rescue CAF draw

Panthere Sportive and Rayon Sports FC drew 1-1 in the first leg of the opening round of the 2026 CAF Confederation Cup, after Valentin Beo Bato’s spectacular early goal was cancelled out by Junior Kameni’s late equaliser.

The Panthere du Nde forward produced the game’s outstanding moment in the 14th minute, launching himself into an acrobatic overhead kick that flew into the top corner.

The finish immediately lifted the atmosphere and left the Rayon Sports defence with little chance of preventing Panthere Sportive from taking the lead. It was a goal of exceptional quality and gave the Cameroonian side the advantage during a lively opening to the tie.

Rayon Sports, known as the “Gikundiro”, were forced to respond after the interval. The Rwandan visitors returned from half-time with greater urgency, and the match developed into a demanding contest dominated by intensity and physical challenges.

Both teams competed for control in a second half in which the tactical battle became increasingly fierce. Rayon Sports pressed high and persistently, attempting to unsettle Panthere Sportive and force an opening in the home defence.

Their pressure eventually produced a reward with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Junior Kameni was alert inside the area when the opportunity arrived, and he reacted quickly to send the ball into the net in the 80th minute.

That strike brought Rayon Sports level at a crucial stage of the match and ensured the visitors avoided defeat after falling behind to Beo Bato’s outstanding effort.

The closing stages remained competitive, with neither side able to find a winning goal before the final whistle. The 1-1 scoreline leaves the tie finely balanced, although the result carries different significance for the two clubs.

For Panthere Sportive, the draw will feel like an incomplete outcome after they had taken the lead on home soil and held that advantage for much of the match. Rayon Sports, however, can regard the result as a valuable return from the first leg.

The Rwandan club leave with an away goal, giving the “Gikundiro” an important advantage from a potentially decisive first encounter. The contest now remains open after a dramatic match in which Panthere Sportive’s early brilliance was followed by a determined Rayon Sports response.
