U17 AFCON: Laryea Kingston delighted with Uganda’s dominant win over DR Congo
Laryea Kingston has praised the performance of his Uganda national under-17 football team players following their impressive victory over DR Congo national under-17 football team at the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Ghana international guided Uganda to a commanding 3-0 triumph in their opening Group B fixture on Wednesday, giving the East Africans a perfect start to the tournament.
Kingston Pleased With Players’ Display
Speaking after the match, Kingston expressed satisfaction not only with the result but also with the overall performance produced by his young side.
“It was a very good performance. To say I am satisfied — yes, definitely. Every team dreams of winning their first game in a competition because the opening match is always very important,” Kingston said in comments quoted by CAFOnline.
The Ugandan coach admitted that some of his players initially struggled with the occasion due to their lack of international experience.
Young Players Settled Into The Game
According to Kingston, many members of the squad were travelling outside Uganda for the first time, which affected the team mentally during the opening stages of the contest.
“Mentally, I think the occasion affected some of the players a little bit because most of them are very young and for many of them it was their first time travelling outside Uganda. We did not start the game very well, but as the match progressed, the boys settled down,” he explained.
The former Black Stars winger added that the players successfully followed the tactical instructions from the coaching staff and gradually grew into the match.
“Everything we taught them, they stuck to the game plan and gradually started expressing themselves. From a technical perspective, myself and my staff are very pleased with the performance,” Kingston added.
Uganda Top Group B
The emphatic victory sees Uganda move to the top of Group B ahead of their upcoming fixture against Cameroon national under-17 football team.
The result has also boosted confidence within the Ugandan camp as they continue their quest for qualification to the knockout stages of the tournament.
