U-17 AFCON: CAF to review misconduct claims after Senegal players’ gestures spark controversy after win over Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to open a disciplinary review into Senegal’s U-17 national team following allegations that players and members of the technical staff made provocative gestures during their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U-17 semi-final clash against Morocco on Thursday.

The incident, which occurred during a heated encounter between the two sides, has drawn widespread criticism after clips circulating on social media appeared to show Senegalese players reacting toward sections of the crowd in a manner deemed unsporting by observers.

The behaviour has triggered debate online, with many fans and analysts describing it as unprofessional for a youth tournament of such magnitude.

While CAF has yet to issue an official sanction, the governing body is understood to be reviewing match footage and reports from officials before deciding whether disciplinary action is warranted.

If confirmed, potential punishments could range from fines to suspensions for individuals involved, in line with CAF’s disciplinary code on misconduct and bringing the game into disrepute.

The scrutiny comes at a sensitive moment in the tournament, with Senegal still preparing for the final against Tanzania on Tuesday, June 2. Any disciplinary measures could potentially affect team morale and preparations ahead of the decisive fixture.

CAF has in recent years taken a firmer stance on player and team conduct at youth and senior levels, especially in high-pressure knockout matches, as part of efforts to preserve discipline and sporting integrity.

For now, attention remains on whether the governing body will escalate the matter beyond its ongoing review or allow the focus to return solely to the tournament final.
