Spain reject World Cup withdrawal rumours as Morocco push for 2030 final

Spain’s Football Federation president Rafael Louzán has rejected reports that the country could withdraw from hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup if Morocco is chosen to stage the tournament’s final.

Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena COPE, Louzán said there was no basis for speculation about Spain abandoning the joint hosting project, stressing that the tournament is governed by formal agreements involving Spain, Portugal, Morocco, FIFA and the Spanish government.

Louzán also insisted that he does not have the authority to determine which stadium will host the 2030 World Cup final.

According to the Spanish football chief, the issue should have been addressed when Spain, Portugal and Morocco were awarded the right to organise the tournament.

His comments come as discussions continue over where the competition’s biggest match will be played.

Morocco pushing Hassan II Stadium bid

Morocco is seeking to host the final at the Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane, a major project being developed ahead of the tournament.

Spain, meanwhile, has the Santiago Bernabéu among its potential venues for the showpiece fixture.

With no final decision yet announced, the battle over the venue has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal.

Spain rejects withdrawal speculation

The disagreement over the final venue has fuelled reports of tensions between the co-hosting countries, including speculation that Spain could reconsider its involvement.

Louzán’s comments, however, appear to have played down those concerns, with the federation president calling for the issue to be handled through the agreements and commitments governing the tournament rather than emotional or national considerations.

The final venue therefore remains unresolved, with the Hassan II Stadium and Santiago Bernabéu at the centre of the debate.
