Tylon Smith joins New England Revolution on loan from QPR

New England Revolution have signed Bafana Bafana defender Tylon Smith on loan from Queens Park Rangers through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with the Major League Soccer club holding an option to make the move permanent.

Smith, 21, becomes the latest South African defender to move to Major League Soccer after securing a transfer from the English Championship side. His switch follows the recent moves of Olwethu Makhanya and Mbekezeli Mbokazi to the competition.

The central defender joined Queens Park Rangers after an impressive showing at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named Player of the Tournament. That performance helped earn him a move to English football, although opportunities to play for QPR have been limited.

New England Revolution confirmed the agreement on Thursday, stating: “The New England Revolution have acquired central defender Tylon Smith on loan from Queens Park Rangers F.C. through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to purchase,”

The deal gives Smith the opportunity to continue his development in the United States while remaining under contract with Queens Park Rangers during the loan period. New England Revolution general manager and chief soccer officer Chris Tierney said the player would add strength to the club’s defence.

“Tylon Smith is a promising player who will help strengthen our defence.

“At just 21 years old, Tylon has built a strong foundation through both his club and youth national team experience.

“We’re confident that this is the ideal environment for Tylon to continue his development and we look forward to welcoming him to New England.”

Smith developed through the youth system at Stellenbosch, but did not make a senior appearance for the club before moving to Queens Park Rangers. His performances for South Africa’s under-20 side remain the defining feature of his career to date, with the Player of the Tournament award at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations preceding his move to the Championship.

The loan to New England Revolution now represents the next stage of his career. It also gives Smith a route to regular competitive football after limited game-time at Queens Park Rangers, while the MLS club have the option to complete a permanent transfer at the end of the agreed period.
