The African Handball Clubs Championship for League Champions has been thrown into uncertainty after two teams withdrew just hours before the competition began in Angola.
The withdrawals, announced on the morning the tournament was due to start, led organisers to cancel the opening schedule, including matches involving Al Ahly, Interclube of Angola, Zamalek and the Rwandan Army.
Al Ahly’s match against Interclube had been scheduled for 16:00 local time at Kilamba Hall, while Zamalek were due to face the Rwandan Army at 14:00.
All participating teams were informed that a new technical meeting would take place at 16:00 on Monday. The meeting will address the latest developments and determine a revised schedule for the tournament.
Hany El-Nagdy, Al Ahly’s handball team manager, confirmed that the match against Interclube had been cancelled.
He added that the meeting could result in further changes to the tournament’s format and group composition, depending on the number of teams remaining after the latest withdrawals.
Ahmed Khoshba, Zamalek’s handball team manager, also confirmed that his side’s fixture against the Rwandan Army would not take place as planned.
Khoshba said the technical meeting could lead to amendments to both the competition format and the timing of the matches, based on the latest information concerning the participating teams.
