Tunisia confirms participation in 2024 CHAN amid scheduling challenges
Tunisia’s Football Federation has officially confirmed the participation of its national team of local players in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in February.
The decision followed extensive discussions to address scheduling conflicts between the tournament and Tunisia’s domestic league, ultimately paving the way for the “Eagles of Carthage” to compete on the continental stage.
After careful deliberation, the Federation’s governing body developed a solution to allow Tunisia’s CHAN involvement without significantly disrupting the local league.
This includes a plan whereby each domestic club will be permitted to send a maximum of two players to the national squad.
This approach, agreed upon with the national team’s technical staff, led by head coach Qais Al-Yaqoubi, aims to help clubs maintain balance within their squads during the league season.
An informed source close to the Federation said, “The biggest challenge was managing the league’s continuity without major disruptions.
With the two-player limit per club, we believe we can maintain competitive integrity in the league while also fielding a strong team for CHAN.”
Tunisia’s commitment to the tournament follows the withdrawal of regional powerhouses Egypt and Algeria.
This led to Tunisia’s automatic qualification for the final tournament, reducing financial and logistical burdens for the Federation.
The team will look to make a mark in CHAN, an event that showcases the best of local African talent.
For Tunisian players, particularly those from the domestic league, CHAN offers a valuable platform to demonstrate their skills to both fans and national selectors.
Tunisia, which previously won the tournament in 2011, will be looking to replicate that success in the upcoming edition.
The championship will provide local players with an opportunity to shine on an international stage and potentially earn consideration for future national team call-ups.
