Tso criticises Petersen after costly Kaizer Chiefs error

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen should have dealt with the corner that allowed Polokwane City to rescue a 1-1 draw, according to iDiski TV analyst Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi.

Chiefs appeared on course for victory at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium after taking a 1-0 lead, but Polokwane City attacker Giovanni Philander scored directly from a corner late in the match.

The goal denied Amakhosi maximum points and marked the fourth occasion this season that an error by Petersen had cost the club all three points. The goalkeeper failed to deal with the set-piece after it struck the woodwork before ending up in the back of the net.

The result, together with the outcomes of other matches, left Kaizer Chiefs fourth in the Betway Premiership standings on 12 points from six games. They are eight points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played eight matches.

Vilakazi said Petersen’s positioning and attempted intervention were not good enough, particularly given the goalkeeper’s involvement with the national team.

“I’m disappointed,” said Tso on iDiski TV.

“Why am I disappointed is that when we call your name to go represent us at the national team, and then you come and then make a mistake like this, then I don’t know. I’m not saying he’s not a keeper that should not concede goals, but not like this. Like this, no, it’s uncalled for.

“I’m trying to put nice words in the action itself because it’s an easy thing. Step up, stand in that pole, the ball hits you here [on the body], you get the ball, done, finished. But Petersen I don’t know what he was thinking, and again, it shows me that he didn’t have that eye contact with the ball from that distance of that corner flag swinging in coming here.

“I mean really, he should see that. I mean your action, you are covering. I know maybe somebody will argue and say the ball had power. I get it. But you are saying that seeing that ball from that corner flag… It’s possible.

“I know sometimes these boys have got power; they can bend those balls but this one, I think even I at my age I could have done better. We can see that he was there in the pole but how he got there, he went there wrongly because his body should protect.

“I mean hit the pole with your shoulder and then get the ball. But if you’re going to position yourself like he did, chances are it’s going to in, and that’s why they conceded.”
