Kaizer Chiefs are close to completing a deal for Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana after agreeing personal terms with the free agent on Monday.
The move is expected to be finalised this week, although some details still need to be settled. The transfer will also depend on the 27-year-old successfully passing a medical before it can be formally completed.
Mokwana was previously considered by Kaizer Chiefs two years ago, but chose to move to Tunisia instead. He joined Esperance de Tunis from Sekhukhune United in August 2024 in a deal reported to be worth around R7-million.
The winger became a free agent in September after ending his time with Esperance. That departure came shortly after he returned from a loan spell with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hazem.
A move to Moroccan side Wydad Athletic Club was subsequently reported to be close. However, registration problems prevented the transfer from going ahead, leaving Mokwana to reassess his options without a club.
Mokwana had returned to his home province of Mpumalanga while considering his next move, according to information provided to the public broadcaster. It was during that period that interest from AmaKhosi developed.
Kaizer Chiefs have been seeking to add to their attacking options, and Mokwana would bring pace, direct running and international experience to the squad.
Because he is without a club, Kaizer Chiefs would not have to pay a transfer fee for the player. The agreement remains subject to the outstanding formalities, most importantly the medical examination.
If completed, the transfer would give Mokwana another opportunity to join the Soweto club after their interest in him failed to result in a move in 2024.
