Kaizer Chiefs have reached an agreement with Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana, who is expected to have a medical after personal terms were settled.
Mokwana has been a free agent since leaving Esperance earlier this year and was offered to the Soweto club in recent weeks. Talks have now resulted in a breakthrough, with Kaizer Chiefs expected to confirm his arrival this week.
The move comes as Kaizer Chiefs look to strengthen their squad with the season approaching its halfway stage. They were beaten 2-1 by rivals Amakhosi on Saturday in front of a sold-out Finn Stadium, a result which underlined the need for reinforcements.
Mokwana is understood to have been keen on joining Kaizer Chiefs, and the proposed move could provide fresh impetus to a career that has stalled since his move to North Africa.
The winger earned that transfer after an impressive spell with Sekhukhune United. He made 51 domestic appearances for Babina Noko and scored five goals, while his consistent performances also helped him break into the national team under Hugo Broos.
However, his progress at Esperance was restricted by limited playing time and tactical changes. He subsequently joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem on loan in an effort to regain his form and regular football.
The lack of consistent club appearances also affected his international prospects. Mokwana lost his place in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad before crucial qualifiers and was not selected for Bafana Bafana’s World Cup squad.
At Kaizer Chiefs, the direct winger would face competition for a starting position from Langelihle Phili, Mfundo Vilakazi and Asanele Velebayi.
The transfer remains subject to Mokwana completing his medical, but an agreement on personal terms has already been reached. Subject to the final steps being completed, the club is expected to unveil him in Naturena this week.
