Kaizer Chiefs’ promising young defender, Luke Donn Fleurs, tragically lost his life in a horrific botched hijacking incident in Honeydew, Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The 1.82m-tall player was driving his red VW Golf 8 GTI when he stopped at a petrol station on 14th Avenue.
Two armed assailants in a white BMW 1 Series approached him, demanding his vehicle.
Despite complying, Fleurs was shot in the upper body and left for dead as the criminals fled with his car.
The former South Africa U23 player was rushed to a nearby medical facility but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Gauteng police have launched a murder and car hijacking investigation, but as of now, no arrests have been made.
Fleurs’ untimely demise has shocked the football community in South Africa.
He began his senior career at Ubuntu Cape Town before moving to SuperSport United and later signing with Kaizer Chiefs.
Despite his young age, Fleurs had shown immense promise in the sport and had even received call-ups to the Bafana Bafana squad.
