Bright Osayi Samuel, the Nigerian defender for Trabzonspor, has been spared from any sanctions following the scuffles that marred the recent clash between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe.
In a decision announced by the Disciplinary Committee of the Turkish Football League, it was determined that Osayi Samuel’s actions during the match on March 17, 2024, were deemed to be a legitimate act of self-defense against an aggressor, absolving him from any disciplinary measures.
While Osayi Samuel avoided sanctions, two players from Fenerbahçe faced consequences for their involvement in the altercations.
Turkish goalkeeper Irfan Can Eğribayat and Dutch defender Jayden Oosterwolde were both handed one-match suspensions as a result of their actions during the heated encounter.
Trabzonspor, who hosted Fenerbahçe for the match, will face their own set of penalties. The club has been handed a six-match home supporter ban, meaning they will play their next six home matches without the backing of their fans.
Additionally, Trabzonspor has been fined 3 million 112 thousand TL in connection with the incidents that occurred during the game.
These sanctions come into immediate effect following their announcement on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, adding further repercussions to the fallout from the contentious match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe.
The decision highlights the Football League’s commitment to maintaining discipline and fair play within the sport while also recognizing instances of legitimate self-defense, as in the case of Bright Osayi Samuel.
As both clubs navigate the aftermath of the clash, attention now turns to their upcoming fixtures and their efforts to uphold the integrity of the game on and off the pitch.
