Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur after conceding an equaliser in stoppage time, despite Spurs playing with 10 men for the final stages of Saturday’s Premier League meeting at Old Trafford.
Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 73rd minute, but Dominic Solanke headed Tottenham level in the 92nd minute from Sandro Tonali’s cross. The result extended United’s winless run in the league to four matches and increased the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
The point leaves Manchester United 12th in the table with six points. Tottenham moved up to 18th on three points, but are still waiting for their first victory of the season.
United began positively, but Tottenham created the first clear opening after only three minutes. A misplaced pass from Harry Maguire allowed Solanke to get a close-range effort away, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens made the save to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.
Spurs continued to threaten as Lucas Bergvall tested the United defence with a shot in the 17th minute. Mohammed Kudus then missed a major opportunity four minutes later when his effort went narrowly wide of the post.
Tottenham remained in control for much of the first half, and had another promising chance five minutes after the interval. Savio sent a cross across the face of goal, but Luke Shaw intervened at the last moment to clear the danger.
United thought they had taken the lead in the 55th minute when Youri Tielemans found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside after Tottenham’s defence had briefly stopped.
Carrick responded by making three changes in the 59th minute. Diogo Dalot replaced Leny Yoro, Carlos Baleba came on for Tielemans and Joshua Zirkzee took the place of Amad Diallo.
The reshuffle helped United find a breakthrough. Matheus Cunha dribbled past Savio before supplying Mbeumo, who sent a low left-footed shot into the far corner to give the home side the advantage.
Tottenham’s task became more difficult in the 78th minute when Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a red card following an altercation with Shaw. The incident sparked a confrontation involving players from both teams.
Lisandro Martinez was booked in the 87th minute for a challenge on James Maddison, but Spurs continued to push forward despite their numerical disadvantage. Their persistence was rewarded when Tonali delivered a cross and Solanke headed home from close range in the second minute of added time.
United made two further substitutions in the fifth minute of stoppage time, with Aiden Heaven replacing Shaw and Marcus Rashford coming on for Cunha. However, they could not take advantage of having an extra player and had to settle for a draw.
