Themba Zwane’s 19 trophies underline remarkable Mamelodi Sundowns longevity

Themba Zwane has won 19 major trophies during a 14-year career with Mamelodi Sundowns after adding the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup to his collection.

The 37-year-old midfielder, widely known as “Mshishi”, joined The Brazilians in January 2011 and has made more than 400 appearances for the club. He is Mamelodi Sundowns’ longest-serving player and one of the most decorated footballers in South African football history.

Zwane’s honours include nine Betway Premiership titles. He was part of the league-winning teams in the 2015/16, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

His latest league medal came in May 2025, when Mamelodi Sundowns secured an eighth consecutive championship. Zwane’s involvement was restricted by injury during that campaign, with the midfielder making one start and six substitute appearances.

His success has also extended across the continent. Zwane won the CAF Champions League in 2015/16 and 2025/26, while also claiming the CAF Super Cup in 2017 and the African Football League in 2023.

In domestic cup competitions, he has three Nedbank Cup winners’ medals, secured in the 2014/15, 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons. His honours also include Telkom Knockout triumphs in 2015 and 2019, as well as the MTN8 in 2021.

Zwane’s individual achievements have matched his team success. During the 2019/20 season, he won the PSL Footballer of the Season award, the Players’ Player of the Season award and the Midfielder of the Season award.

He represented Mamelodi Sundowns as captain at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The South African side began the tournament with a historic 1-0 victory over Ulsan HD.

However, their campaign ended in the group stage after a 4-3 defeat by Borussia Dortmund and a goalless draw against Fluminense.
