The statistics behind Orlando Pirates’ all-conquering season in South Africa
Orlando Pirates enjoyed a landmark 2025/26 campaign that saw them complete a domestic treble and finally bring an end to Mamelodi Sundowns’ eight-year grip on the Betway Premiership.
The Soweto giants sealed the league title with a 2-0 win over Orbit College on the final day, a result that confirmed a first championship in 14 years and capped a season defined by consistency, control, and record-breaking numbers across the board.
While there were setbacks in continental football and an unexpected cup exit, Pirates’ league performance told a far more dominant story, with several statistical milestones highlighting just how strong they were over the course of the season.
One of the most striking aspects of their campaign was discipline. Across 30 league matches, Pirates did not receive a single red card, maintaining composure in high-pressure situations throughout a tight title race.
Defensively, they were equally impressive. The team conceded just 12 goals all season, narrowly missing out on the PSL record and finishing as the tightest defence in the division. Their organisation at the back was further underlined by a joint league-record 21 clean sheets, with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine playing every minute of those shutouts.
Consistency also played a major role in their success. Pirates lost only three league matches all season, matching one of their best defensive records in decades. However, those defeats came early or in key moments, including a loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in February.
Their ability to control games when ahead proved decisive. On the occasions they scored first, they almost always finished the job, dropping points only once in such scenarios and turning leads into victories with ruthless efficiency.
At the other end of the pitch, Pirates combined steady scoring with crucial bursts of attacking output. They netted 58 league goals, their highest tally in a 30-game PSL season, with a significant portion arriving in the first half of matches. They also showed late-game resilience, scoring multiple goals beyond the 90th minute to secure important points.
Individual contributions were also key to their success. Relebohile Mofokeng emerged as one of the league’s standout performers with 18 goal contributions, while Oswin Appollis added 15 of his own in a debut season that saw him heavily involved in almost every match.
Squad depth played its part too, with Pirates using 33 different players in the league campaign alone. Despite the rotation, the team maintained stability, particularly in away fixtures where they recorded the best record in the division with 36 points collected on the road.
Home form was also strong, with only a handful of defeats at their own ground and one of the lowest defensive concessions in the league.
In total, Pirates accumulated 69 points, a club record and enough to edge out Sundowns in one of the closest title races in recent years. Across all competitions, they played 44 matches, winning the majority and completing a season that delivered three major trophies.
At the heart of it all, Sipho Chaine stood out as an ever-present figure, playing every league minute, while defender Lebone Seema led the outfield in minutes played and also topped the team’s disciplinary chart.
Taken together, the numbers paint a clear picture of a side built on structure, consistency and efficiency — a team that finally matched dominance with delivery and restored Orlando Pirates to the summit of South African football.
