Thapelo Maseko targets success after joining FC Copenhagen from Mamelodi Sundowns

New FC Copenhagen signing Thapelo Maseko says he is determined to make a lasting impact after completing his move from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 22-year-old was presented by the Danish club on Tuesday after signing a four-year contract. FC Copenhagen paid R28m for the South African forward, who will wear the number 12 shirt.

Maseko said the move represented a significant moment in his career and made clear that he wants to contribute to the club’s pursuit of further success.

“I am very proud of this agreement,” Maseko told the club media department. “It is a dream come true. To me, FC Copenhagen is a very special club.

“They are a club that is highly recognised internationally, and [Sibusiso] Zuma has told me so many great things about the club, the fans, and the city. I am looking forward to experiencing it all myself.

“I am truly honoured to get this opportunity, and it fills me with hunger and ambition. I have come here to make a difference and leave my mark on the club. I have big ambitions for the club and on a personal level. I come here to win, and I am very excited to get out on the pitch and give everything I’ve got.”

Maseko joins FC Copenhagen after his spell with Mamelodi Sundowns, having agreed a deal that will keep him at the Danish club for the next four years.

FC Copenhagen head coach Bo Svensson believes the new arrival will offer speed, attacking directness and the ability to create problems for defenders in one-on-one situations.

“In Thapelo we get an explosive, dynamic player with exceptional qualities in direct one-on-one situations. His pace and ability to challenge his direct opponent will make him a constant threat in behind, but he can also use his left foot to assist teammates when cutting inside,” Svensson said.

“There are naturally still elements to refine, but Thapelo’s potential is high, and he always works tirelessly for the team, so we are really looking forward to working with him daily.”

Svensson said there were aspects of Maseko’s game that still needed to be developed, but praised the player’s potential and his willingness to work for the team.

Maseko’s arrival gives FC Copenhagen an attacking player who can threaten opponents with his pace and direct running, while also offering an additional creative option when moving inside from a wide position.

The South African will now begin his four-year stay at the club with the stated aim of helping FC Copenhagen achieve more success, while also establishing himself at a new club and leaving a significant mark during his time in Denmark.
