Thabo Nodada braces for tense Pirates clash as Durban City refuse to be bystanders in title race
Durban City midfielder Thabo Nodada has admitted that Saturday’s penultimate league encounter against Orlando Pirates is unlikely to be a pleasant experience, but insists his side will approach the fixture with full commitment despite the high-stakes context surrounding it.
The fixture at Orlando Amstel Arena carries significant weight for the hosts, with Pirates on the verge of sealing a long-awaited league crown.
The Soweto giants, newly crowned Nedbank Cup champions, need maximum points to confirm what would be their first league title since the 2011/12 season.
In recent years, they have repeatedly fallen short, finishing runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns in the past three campaigns, a trend they are determined to end this time.
For Durban City, however, the match represents more than a potential spoiler role. The club, currently sitting seventh on the table, are intent on strengthening their position to secure MTN8 qualification, while also balancing the momentum gained from their recent cup success, which guarantees them participation in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite the contrasting objectives, Nodada was candid about the emotional weight of the occasion, especially with a sold-out crowd expected to witness a potentially decisive night in the title race.
“We are not going to enjoy that game [against Pirates]. I saw a record, I think they said the stadium is sold out. To be in the position we are in, why us [who play Pirates in a title-deciding fixture]?” he said.
The midfielder expanded on the emotional complexity of facing a side on the brink of glory, while stressing that professionalism leaves little room for sentiment once the whistle blows.
“Why do you come from a Nedbank Cup final [where they beat TS Galaxy 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium a few weeks ago] and you have a chance to decide something that’s so far out of your reach, you know? It’s a game of football, it’s 90 minutes. We will go there and do our best. If our best is better than their best, [we will win].”
Pirates’ surge towards the title has added intensity to what was already expected to be a fiercely contested fixture, with the Sea Robbers eager to avoid another late-season collapse.
For Durban City, the challenge lies in maintaining discipline and focus amid an atmosphere charged with expectation, pressure and history in the making.
