Teboho Mokoena opens up on costly crypto mistake and financial lessons
Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena has revealed the worst financial advice he has received during his football career, admitting that an investment in cryptocurrency left him counting his losses.
Mokoena, who continues to shine for both club and country, shared his experience in a preview of his upcoming appearance on Investec South Africa’s Everything Counts podcast.
The midfield star is currently enjoying a successful period in his career after helping Mamelodi Sundowns secure CAF Champions League glory. He is also gearing up for next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
In the podcast teaser released on social media, Mokoena reflects on his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of South Africa’s leading football figures.
The 28-year-old discusses growing up around his grandmother’s business, signing his first professional contracts and developing a more thoughtful approach to finances.
One of the most striking moments from the preview came when Mokoena was asked about the worst financial advice he had ever received.
“It’s Forex. Someone told me about Bitcoin and crypto, I bought it and ended up losing money,” Mokoena admitted.
The Sundowns midfielder also spoke candidly about the reluctance among athletes to discuss financial matters openly.
“As gents, we don’t talk about money; it’s a sensitive topic,” he said.
Mokoena’s remarks offer a rare glimpse into the financial realities faced by professional footballers, highlighting the lessons learned through personal experience and the importance of making informed decisions.
The full episode of Everything Counts is scheduled for release on 2 June, with fans expected to gain deeper insight into the life and career of one of South African football’s most influential players.
Meanwhile, Mokwena has been named in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
