Tapelo Xoki included in Orlando Pirates squad for long-awaited return

Orlando Pirates have been handed a significant defensive boost with Tapelo Xoki included in the travelling squad for Tuesday’s match against newly promoted Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.

The 31-year-old centre-back has been absent for 15 months after suffering serious injuries in a roadside vehicle accident in May 2025. His inclusion in the squad suggests he is now nearing a long-awaited return to competitive football.

Xoki has travelled with the Orlando Pirates group ahead of their meeting with Kruger United, although it remains unclear whether head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will select him to play a part in the match.

The defender has been working with the first team for several months as he builds towards a return. His last competitive appearance came during the latter stages of the 2024/25 campaign, before the accident brought his season to an abrupt end.

The possible comeback represents a major lift for Orlando Pirates, with Xoki having established himself as a robust and hard-tackling defender before his lengthy spell on the sidelines. He is also the club’s vice-captain, adding further experience to a squad preparing to face a newly promoted opponent away from home.

However, returning to the starting line-up will not be straightforward. Xoki faces strong competition for a place at the centre of the defence, with Lebone Seema currently holding the distinction of being the reigning Betway Premiership Defender of the Season.

He would also have to displace Nkosinathi Sibisi, the established 31-year-old Bafana Bafana international, if he is to reclaim a regular starting position. Another contender is 24-year-old prospect Mpho Chabatsane, who provides further competition in the same area of the team.

Ouaddou therefore has several options to consider before deciding whether Xoki is ready to return immediately or whether the defender will be eased back into action. His presence in the travelling squad is nevertheless the clearest indication yet that he is close to ending his extended absence.

Orlando Pirates will face Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday evening, with Xoki’s involvement likely to be one of the key points of interest before kick-off. After more than a year away from competitive football, the experienced defender is now in contention to make his return, subject to the coach’s selection decision.
