Zakaria El Ouahdi remains doubtful for Hoffenheim

Hamburger SV are facing a late fitness concern over Zakaria El Ouahdi ahead of Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to TSG Hoffenheim.

The 24-year-old right-back returned from international duty with Morocco suffering from a cold and has been unable to train with the first team this week. HSV coach Merlin Polzin confirmed the defender’s condition during Thursday’s press conference, leaving his availability dependent on how he responds before the match.

“Zaka returned with a cold. He was here over the past few days but not yet able to train with the team,” Polzin said.

The decisive assessment is expected to come during Friday’s training session. Polzin acknowledged that El Ouahdi is eager to play but stressed that the club must determine whether it would be sensible for him to feature while recovering from his illness.

The Moroccan has made an immediate impact since joining HSV, starting each of the club’s first three Bundesliga matches. His attacking energy and ability to repeatedly cover the right flank have made him an important part of Polzin’s plans.

If El Ouahdi is unavailable, HSV could turn to Bakery Jatta or youngster Kelvin Ojo as alternatives. His final status is likely to be determined shortly before Saturday’s 15:30 kick-off.
