In a significant development for East African football, Wallace Karia, President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), has been elected to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee.
Karia’s candidacy received unanimous backing from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), following the withdrawal of Moses Magogo, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), who stepped aside to support Karia’s bid.
Karia’s election marks him as the second Tanzanian to serve on the CAF Executive Committee, following in the footsteps of Leodegar Tenga.
His leadership has been instrumental in advancing football in Tanzania, with the national team’s qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2021 African Nations Championship (CHAN) among the notable achievements during his tenure.
The CECAFA region also endorsed Souleiman Hassan Waberi, President of the Djibouti Football Federation, for a position on the FIFA Council, reflecting a strategic move to enhance the region’s influence in global football governance.
Karia’s ascent to the CAF Executive Committee is anticipated to bolster East African representation and contribute to the development of football across the continent.
