Mamelodi Sundowns lead Richards Bay FC 2-1 at half-time in a closely contested Betway Premiership match on Tuesday evening.
The reigning MTN8 champions went into the game aiming to increase their advantage at the top of the standings after beating Orlando Pirates to win the competition. Richards Bay, meanwhile, were looking to make a strong start under new manager Dimitar Pantev and provide their new coach with a positive introduction.
Sundowns started with the greater attacking intent and came close to opening the scoring when Iqraam Rayners headed Fawaaz Basadien’s accurate cross wide.
They were rewarded in the 18th minute. Siyanda Ndlovu created space near the six-yard area before setting up Tashreeq Matthews, who finished to put Masandawana ahead.
Richards Bay responded quickly and were level four minutes later. Sundowns failed to fully clear the danger, allowing inspirational defender Lwandile Mabuya to produce a composed finish and bring the Natal Rich Boys back into the contest.
The visitors restored their advantage eight minutes before the interval, with Matthews and Rayners reversing their roles. Matthews moved into a wide position and delivered the ball into the area, where Rayners finished to make it 2-1.
Richards Bay started with Otieno in goal, behind Makhalala, Mabuya, Mkhabela, Mcineka, Gumbi, Khumalo, Mthembu, Xulu, Gumede and Nzama.
Their substitutes were Ngcobo, Mntungwa, Sikhakhane, Ndelu, Mncube, Ngema, Ngidi, Mahala and Mbambo.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ starting line-up consisted of Williams, Ndamane, Khoza, Matuludi, Basadien, Mokoena, Allende, Ndlovu, Matthews, Mailula and Rayners.
Sundowns’ substitutes were Goss, Leon, Mvala, Morena, Lunga, Cele, Santis, Zwane and Van Wyk.
