Sundowns must score ‘as many goals as we can’ to overturn Arrows deficit

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Siyanda Ndlovu says his side must fight with everything they have and score as many goals as possible if they are to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Golden Arrows in the MTN8 semi-final second leg.

The teams meet again at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.

Golden Arrows, known as Abafana Bes’thende, take a narrow advantage into the decisive encounter after recording a surprise victory over the Tshwane giants in the first leg in Pretoria last weekend.

Sundowns now face the task of recovering from that result if they are to reach the final. Ndlovu said the team understood what was required and was focused on producing the attacking performance needed to change the tie’s direction.

“I think it’s a big game that won’t be easy, but what we can promise to the fans is that we will fight as much as we can,” Ndlovu told the Sundowns media department.

The attacker said Sundowns’ priority would be to find the net repeatedly, believing that goals would give them the strongest possible opportunity of securing the result they need.

“I think we need to score as many goals as we can. That will really help us come out with the desired result.”

Although Arrows hold the lead, Ndlovu expects his former club could adopt a similar approach to the one they used in the opening match. He acknowledged that he could not be certain of their plans, but said Sundowns had to be prepared for the possibility.

When asked how Arrows might approach the second leg, Ndlovu said, “I may not be sure, but I think they can approach the game the same way they did in the first leg.

“But I’m hoping we can be able to deal with it this time around.”

The result in Pretoria means Sundowns must overturn a one-goal disadvantage at King Zwelithini Stadium. Their route to the MTN8 final will depend on how effectively they respond to the first-leg defeat and whether they can turn their attacking intentions into goals.

For Golden Arrows, the challenge will be to protect the advantage secured in the opening meeting and complete the job in front of their home support. Sundowns, meanwhile, will be looking to ensure that their efforts produce the “desired result” Ndlovu referred to as they attempt to keep their hopes of winning the semi-final alive.
