Sundowns’ league opener postponed after Jayden Adams tragedy

Mamelodi Sundowns’ start to the new season has been pushed back after the death of Jayden Adams led to changes in the Premier Soccer League’s opening weekend schedule.

The champions had been due to launch their campaign against Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening, but the PSL has confirmed that the fixture will no longer take place as originally planned.

In its announcement of the first round of league matches, the league noted that the Sundowns–Gallants clash is to be moved, meaning the defending “kings of Africa” will not feature in the opening weekend programme.

No alternative date or venue for the game has yet been communicated by the PSL.

Pre-season disrupted

Sundowns are currently in Austria on a pre-season tour, continuing preparations for the defence of their domestic and continental titles.

The club’s build-up has been overshadowed by the passing of Adams, whose death has been felt across South African football and within the PSL community.

Adams honoured with Chairman’s Award

At the PSL awards ceremony on Monday, Adams was recognised posthumously with the PSL Chairman’s Award, an honour that underlined his impact on the domestic game.

The tribute came just days after his funeral, which was held on Saturday.

The league and clubs observed his passing in the build-up to the new campaign, with the adjustment to Sundowns’ schedule following in the wake of those commemorations.

Mamelodi Sundowns, who have been dominant in South African football in recent seasons and have earned the “kings of Africa” tag through their success on the continent, will now await confirmation of when they will finally kick off their league season after their return from Austria.
