South African clubs await CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup quarter-final draws in Doha
Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Stellenbosch FC are set to learn their quarter-final opponents in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, with the decisive draws scheduled for Thursday in Doha, Qatar.
South Africa’s football heavyweights, Sundowns and Pirates, are in the hunt for Champions League glory, while Stellenbosch FC, making their historic debut in the CAF Confederation Cup, will discover their path forward in the competition.
Sundowns and Pirates Eye Champions League Success
Mamelodi Sundowns, who topped their group, enter the draw as one of the seeded teams, giving them a strategic advantage heading into the knockout stages.
The Pretoria-based side will be hoping for a favorable draw as they seek to add another Champions League title to their trophy cabinet.
Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, advanced as group runners-up, placing them in a more challenging position.
Despite this, the Buccaneers have proven themselves resilient on the continental stage and will be eager to overcome the odds as they target a deep run in the tournament.
The Champions League quarter-final draw features two distinct pots. Pot 1 contains the group winners — Al Ahly (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), MC Alger (Algeria), and Pyramids FC (Egypt).
Pot 2 holds the group runners-up — Al Hilal (Sudan), AS FAR (Morocco), Orlando Pirates (South Africa), and Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia).
Per the draw rules, teams from the same group cannot face each other in the quarter-finals.
The draw process begins by selecting a team from the runners-up pot, followed by its potential opponents from the seeded pot, ensuring no repeat group-stage matchups. This process continues until all quarter-final pairings are finalized.
Once the quarter-finals are set, an additional draw will map out the potential semi-final routes, giving teams a clearer picture of their path to the final. The two-legged quarter-finals are scheduled to kick off on April 1.
Stellenbosch FC’s Historic Confederation Cup Journey
For Stellenbosch FC, Thursday’s draw marks a significant milestone in the club’s history. Competing in their maiden CAF Confederation Cup campaign, the South African side has impressed by reaching the knockout stages and now aims to push further into uncharted territory.
Stellenbosch enters the draw as one of the seeded teams after an impressive group-stage showing. In the Confederation Cup, the seeded teams include CS Constantine (Algeria), Stellenbosch FC (South Africa), ASEC Mimosas (Ivory Coast), and Al Masry (Egypt). The runners-up pot features Simba SC (Tanzania), RS Berkane (Morocco), USM Alger (Algeria), and Zamalek (Egypt).
The Confederation Cup draw mirrors the Champions League format. Teams will be paired without repeating group-stage matchups, followed by a semi-final draw that outlines the road to the final.
Potential Matchups and High-Stakes Showdowns
With some of Africa’s most storied clubs in the mix, both draws promise mouth-watering encounters. Sundowns could potentially face North African powerhouses like Espérance de Tunis or AS FAR, while Pirates might clash with Egyptian giants Al Ahly or face a tricky fixture against MC Alger.
For Stellenbosch, the Confederation Cup presents both a challenge and an opportunity. A draw against Zamalek or defending champions RS Berkane could test their mettle, while a more favorable pairing might pave the way for a historic semi-final berth.
Countdown to Kick-Off
Thursday’s draw in Doha will not only determine the immediate future for South Africa’s top clubs but also set the stage for a thrilling conclusion to this year’s CAF competitions. With high stakes and the dream of continental glory on the line, all eyes will be on the balls drawn in Qatar.
As the quarter-finals approach, South African fans will be eagerly anticipating the next chapter in their clubs’ African adventures, hoping that their teams can go the distance and bring continental silverware home.
